Bradford and Moortown Meeting

posted 7 Oct 2011 01:29 by paul collier   [ updated 31 Jan 2012 02:01 ]

Moortown
The GSGB September Meeting was held at Bradford and Moortown Golf Clubs on September28/29th. West Yorkshire felt more like the West Indies as temperatures reached 27 degrees on both days continuing the good weather trend for our 2011 events. The full results table can be found at the end of this report.

63 members found both courses in magnificent condition with fast and undulating greens on both days as they competed for the ‘Barlow Seniors Trophies’. Dinner was held at Bradford and we were joined by the Bradford Captain Bruce Bannister and his wife Janet. The Captain received the Society donation of £500 and spoke about the recent achievements of the juniors at the club. A number of local members who were not playing in the event also joined us including Peter (our past Chairman) and Dorothy Batty. The scoring proved to be good at Bradford but not quite so good at Moortown which certainly proved to be the more difficult of the two courses, particularly for the ladies as it played 450 yards longer. The Moortown Captain Mr David Powers joined us afterwards and was presented with a cheque for £500 towards the clubs junior section by the Chairman.

The aggregate Ladies winner was Sally Moser from Saffron Walden with 60 points.

For the Men we had a local winner in Derek Walker from Scarcroft who scored 63 points over the 2 days. A special mention must go to our Chairman Alan Golbourn who scored an excellent 74 points, (closely followed by Alan Percival on 73) but was too young to win the Seniors Cup. All results can be seen below. Both courses were very popular with the members and we very much look forward to our next visit.

Bradford and Moortown

This brings the 2011 season to a close but the 2012 entry forms will be posted during November.

Thanks to all of our members who have supported the meetings, I look forward to seeing you all again next year.

Brian Ward.

Moor Park & Porters Park Meeting

posted 21 Aug 2011 07:21 by paul collier   [ updated 31 Jan 2012 02:02 ]

Moor Park
The GSGB August Meeting was held at Moor Park and Porters Park Golf Clubs on August16/17th. With the weather set fair for both days, 62 members competed for the ‘Sir Aynsley Bridgland Trophies’. Both courses were in lovely condition with fast greens and undulating fairways. Dinner at Moor Park is a delightful experience with excellent food in a spectacular location. The photos below show some of the impressive artwork that adorns the walls and ceilings of the clubhouse. The scoring proved to be good on both days. The aggregate Ladies winner was Christine Hinchcliffe from Sand Moor with 69 points (8 handicap).

For the Men we had a very comfortable winner in Russell Wakefield from Bath who scored a very impressive 81 points over the 2 days. Russell plays off a handicap of 12, but probably not for much longer! All results can be seen below.

Both courses were very popular with the members and I’m sure that our next visit will be eagerly anticipated.

The next event is the Tour to Salzburg, Austria on September 3rd – 10th which is followed by the final meeting of 2011 at Bradford and Moortown on September 28/29th.

Carden Park AGM

posted 19 Aug 2011 03:57 by paul collier   [ updated 31 Jan 2012 02:02 ]

Carden Park Clubhouse
Carden Park Hotel in Cheshire was the venue for the 2011 AGM Meeting from 22nd to 24th July. Three days of fine weather (other than a heavy shower late on Friday afternoon) were enjoyed by 113 members. This led to some very good scoring on both courses which are well designed and mainly flat.
The Cheshire having a few more trees and the Nicklaus more water hazards. The Handicap Cups for the best two day aggregate score were won by Nigel Ferriman (Northumberland) 77 points and Fran Dickson (Alwoodley) 67 points. John and Jenny Burgess (Gog Magog) 141points, claimed the Enjoy Golf Together Trophy by having the best husband and wife aggregate score over the two days.  All prize winners are listed below.

Carden AGM

As well as the usual prizes there was a “beat the pro” competition on the Par 3 16th, a short hole that the members took full advantage of. 16 ladies and 10 gents managed to get inside the Pro and win a prize.

The vast majority of members were very impressed by the standard of service, quality of food and attention to detail shown by both the Hotel and golf staff.

The 2012 AGM will return to Carden Park in Cheshire on July 27th-29th.

Our next meeting is at Moor Park & Porters Park on August 16th/17th.

Woodhall Spa

WOODHALL SPA REPORT

63 GSGB members competed for the Scratch Cups on the 20th and 21st June at Woodhall Spa in Lincolnshire.

Glorious sunshine greeted us on Day 1, as everyone prepared for the tough challenge that lay ahead on the wonderful Hotchkin course. The huge bunkers and heather meant that some of the scores were on the low side but everyone enjoyed playing an excellent venue that is regularly ranked as the best inland course in Britain. The course was in excellent condition considering the lack of rain over the four previous months and was very much enjoyed by the members.

The Men’s Day 1 prizes were won by Tim Russell with 33 points beating, Robert Hill on the back 9. Jane Bradburn won the Ladies Day 1 prize with 28 points beating Christine Hinchcliffe, also on the back 9.  A full list of prize winners can be seen below.

GSGB Chairman Alan Golbourn spoke at Dinner and presented the Woodhall Spa Junior Organiser, Mr Barry Chapman, with a cheque for £500 towards the club’s junior section.

Barry spoke of his pride in the club’s successes over the years with their Juniors. In particular with Holly Clyburn who represented GB & I in the 2010 Curtis Cup.

Woodhall Spa photo album

Day 2 was played on the more modern Bracken course and although overhead conditions were cloudier, the rain stayed away. The Bracken course is also a stiff test with a number of water hazards and very undulating greens. Although a completely different type of challenge everyone enjoyed the course.

The Men’s Day 2 winners were Giles Hinchcliffe with 37 points and David Young with 36.

The Ladies winners were Ruth Kirby Smith with 31 points followed by Joyce Storer on 29.

The Handicap Aggregate prize for Men went to Alan Percival with 88 points. The Ladies Handicap Aggregate was won by Freda Brier with 56 points.

The Scratch Cups were won by Alan Golbourn with a total of 56 points and Gillian Curley with 46 points. Congratulations to all winners. The 2010 Scratch winners, Tony and Denise Parker also joined us for the two days but decided not to play as Woodhall Spa is their home course.

The next event is the AGM Meeting which will take place at Carden Park on July 22nd – 24th.

GSGB members competed for The King of Morocco Cup and Society Salver in Surrey on the 17th/18th May. Day 1 was at Camberley Heath GC which is a beautiful course amongst the sand and heather of Surrey’s heathland belt. 62 members enjoyed good weather on both days, the late starters getting ten minutes or so of light rain on the first day. The course was in excellent condition and was very much enjoyed by the members. The 1st day men’s prize was won by Alan Percival with 36 points beating Tim Russell, last year’s winner, on the back 9.

Liz Clark won the Ladies 1st day prize with 29 points beating Jill Slater on the back 9.  A full list of prize winners can be seen below.

GSGB Chairman Alan Golbourn spoke at Dinner and presented the Camberley Heath Captain, Ian Walton with a cheque for £500 towards the club’s junior section. The club was also represented at dinner by the Captain’s wife, Cherry.

Day 2 at Woking GC began at 9.10a.m. using 3 different tees to start the round. Woking is a stunning golf course in wonderful condition and was enjoyed by everyone. The course is currently ranked at number 80 in Golf World’s Top 100 Courses of Britain and Ireland.

The day 2 men’s winners were George Clark with 37 points followed by Ian Edwards on 34, who pipped Michael Bullas on the back 9. The ladies found scoring easier on day 2, Margaret Pugh winning with 32 points closely followed by Celia Edwards on 31.

The aggregate runner-up prizes went to Gillian Curley with 61 points and Brian O’Connell with 74 points. The Society Salver was won by Denise Parker with 65 points and The King of Morocco Cup was won by Michael Curley with a very impressive total of 76 points. Congratulations to all winners, particularly Denise who won playing off a 4 handicap.

After lunch Chairman Alan Golbourn presented the prizes. This was the first visit of the GSGB to Woking and I’m sure that the members are looking forward to returning in the future.

The next Meeting will take place at Woodhall Spa on June 20th/21st. There are a small number of available places if anyone wishes to join us.
