Fifty-seven boys and girls aged 13 or under, gathered at Kenilworth Golf Club on Thursday 12th April 2012 for the fourth playing of the Kenilworth Junior Masters, supported by the Golf Society of Great Britain. With some of the most talented children from across the United Kingdom taking part the competition for the John Butler Trophy promised, as in previous years, to be closely contested. Manchester Golf Club’s, Joseph Bannan, didn’t allow his spirits to be dampened by a heavy and prolonged late morning shower and produced some excellent golf to card a best gross score of 75 – well below what would be expected from an 11 handicap golfer. In second place, just one shot behind, with a gross score of 76 was the local pre-competition favourite, George Gill, from The Warwickshire with Tom Charley from Stoneleigh Deer Park carding a respectable score of 80 to take third place.
In the handicap section, Matthew Metcalf, aged 10, from Myerscough Golf Club took the honours with an exceptional score of 46 stableford points to finish two shots clear of Ffion Tynan, aged 9, from Pontypridd Golf Club with Lucy Jamieson from Heswall Golf Club taking third place with 42 points.
The prizes were presented by Rachel Jennings, European Ladies Tour player, who also entertained competitors and parents alike with a short game clinic prior to the presentation.
