2013 Kenilworth Junior Masters

Forty-eight boys and girls aged thirteen or under, gathered at Kenilworth Golf Club on Thursday 4th April 2013 for the fifth playing of the Kenilworth Junior Masters, supported by the Golf Society of Great Britain.   The competitors had to endure bitterly cold conditions with snow falling during the early part of their rounds and then faced a strong easterly wind once the snow had stopped.  In truth, it was a day when many seasoned golfers might have chosen the warmth of the clubhouse rather than venturing out on to the course!  The scoring in this event, particularly, in the handicap section, is usually astonishingly good but most would have predicted that few, if any, would beat par on such a cold day and with little run on the ball following such a harsh winter. However, as the early groups completed their rounds and returned to the clubhouse with their scorecards it quickly became evident that the scores were not following the predicted script and a surprising number of players had conquered the weather and the course to return sub-par rounds!

As ever, the competition for the John Butler Trophy, awarded to the lowest gross score, was very closely contested.  It was James Bowen from Olton Golf Club who emerged victorious narrowly edging out Rugby Golf Club's Tom Cleaton with a score of 80 to win by just one shot.  In third place was Luke Greene from Newbold Comyn Golf Club who finished four shots behind the leader.

In the handicap section, Harry Lord, aged 11, from Rossendale Golf Club took the honours with an excellent score of 41 stableford points to finish just one shot clear of a trio of players including Rocco Luca from Coventry Golf Club, Jack Drury from Stratford-upon-Avon Golf Club  and Kenilworth’s own Chanon James, aged just 8 years old and playing off a restricted handicap on the day.  On countback, second place was awarded to Rocco Luca with Jack Drury coming third and taking the last of the trophies.

The trophy for the best girl went to Megan Evans from Gaudet Luce Golf Club who produced a gross score of 94, just two shots over her handicap.

Although not featuring in the prizes, it will be a day that Ross Perry, a junior member at Kenilworth Golf Club, will remember for the rest of his life after recording his first ever hole-in-one on the 155 yard 18th hole.  Well done Ross!

After the competition, the participants enjoyed a clinic which was presented by Andy Sullivan, a European Tour player, from Nuneaton Golf Club who currently lies in 41st place on the Race to Dubai.  Andy also presented the prizes and trophies to the winners.
