The GSGB June Meeting was played at Blackmoor and Liphook, two of Hampshire’s highest ranking and most attractive courses. The 74 Members who took part enjoyed glorious playing conditions on both days in stark contrast to the deluge encountered at the May Meeting in Northumberland.
Both courses display the classic fast running characteristics of true heathland golf.
Many of the fairways are lined by heather not to mention numerous bunkers meaning that straight hitting was essential if good scores were to be posted. As expected the greens on both days were very good but at Liphook they were extremely pacy with no shortage of undulation which severely tested everyone’s putting skills. At Dinner we were joined by the Blackmoor Captain Tony Grevatt and his partner Jenny. Tony spoke about the club’s junior section before presenting the President, Chairman and Secretary with a copy of the Blackmoor Centenary book. He then received the £500 donation towards the Blackmoor junior section from GSGB Chairman Linda Hill. Twenty three twos were recorded over the two days which was an unusually high figure.
The Scratch Trophy for men was won by David Archibald from East Herts with 66 points. David is obviously in a rich vein of form as he also won at Hexham in May. The ladies Scratch Trophy was won by Denise Parker from Woodhall Spa who scored 53 points. Congratulations to both players as they had to overcome stiff competition from a number members with low handicaps. The best handicap aggregate scores were recorded by Peter Batchelor from Woburn with 71 points and Clare Fulton also from Woburn with 68. A full list of all prize winners can be seen below.
The next event will be the AGM Meeting at Foxhills on July 22/23rd.
