ADDITIONAL GSGB THAILAND
TOUR INFORMATION:
The areas we will visit
have been carefully selected for their relatively low humidity at this time of
year and Hua Hin for its more temperate year round climate. Chiang Mai, located
300 metres above sea level, tends to be cooler than the capital, while Hua Hin
is protected in the Gulf
of Thailand
, with
cooling sea breezes and influenced the King to locate his summer residence
here. The Centara Grand Beach Resort Hua
Hin is a low rise colonial style beach resort ideally located in the centre of
the small but vibrant town of Hua Hin
,
a former fishing village, and just a short stroll to numerous shops, tailors,
restaurants, bars and a night market.
The resort has 3 swimming pools in extensive grounds with beautiful
topiary gardens and direct access to the beach with palm trees and miles of
golden sand. The Holiday Inn in Chiang
Mai is located directly on the banks of the Mai Ping river, a few minutes taxi
or local tuk tuk ride from the centre of town and the Night Bazaar. It is worth noting that local laundries are
‘cheap as chips’ and provide an excellent service. Restaurants are plentiful in all areas and
cater for all tastes. Thai people
generally buy their clothes tailor-made as reflected by the umpteen tailor
shops everywhere where you can be measured up, fitted and ready to wear a new
suit, coat, silk shirt, trousers or dress within 48 hrs. Not to be missed is the fun of haggling for ‘fake’
designer goods in the night markets.
GOLF COURSE DESCRIPTIONS:
The Alpine Golf Resort,
Chiang Mai Distance from
hotel: (approx 30 mins)
Nestled in a valley
between mountain ranges and natural forests, the course design was inspired by
the magnificent hills on the horizon and the natural beauty and the ‘Alpine’
philosophy has been maintained throughout.
Designed by Ron Garl, one of the world’s best golf course designers who
won the award of ‘Golf Course Designer of the Year’ in 1996 from the
International Network Golf Industry (ING).
Three years before that, he had designed Alpine Golf Club. He is also the designer of most of the golf
courses in the top 50 in Florida,
including the TPC at Prestansia and Palm Beach Polo Club.
Royal Chiangmai Golf
Resort Distance from hotel: (approx 40 mins)
Set within a valley
surrounded by a magnificent mountain range, this is a course of outstanding
natural beauty. The high altitude provides a cooler, less humid climate, clear
air, and gentle breezes, an abundance of wildlife including many species of
local birds and thousands of flowering trees.
The 7000 yd course designed by five-time British open Champion, Peter
Thomson uses many of the elements from a British links style course; including
bumpy gently rolling fairways, numerous pot bunkers and closely mowed areas
around the greens.
Chiang Mai Eastern Highlands Golf Club Distance from hotel: (approx 35 mins)
Opened in 2005 and designed by Schmidt-Curley, the team responsible for
many of Asia's exciting new courses.
Set in the hills outside Chiang Mai, it gives golfers the distraction of magnificent
views on every hole. Exciting and
challenging for players of all levels and offers the choice of 5 different tee
boxes. From the first tee, a sense of
golfing adventure starts as you are surrounded by magnificent views of the
entire course and the mountain skyline in the background. There are over 100 fairway and greenside
bunkers.
Imperial Lake View Princess Golf Club Distance from hotel: (approx 35 mins)
Designed by Roger
Packard and features greens that are often hidden from the tees, coupled with well
defined fairways to provide golfers with the necessary clues to retain their
sense of direction. The course design
conveys a sense of adventure and is great fun to play. The entertaining style produced by Packard
and his team exhibits intrigue and imagination … toying with the preference of
the modern day golfer, who enjoys a fair challenge juxtaposed with opportunity
for justified risk.
Springfield Royal Country Club Distance from hotel: (approx 35 mins)
The Jack Nicklaus
designed “East Course” makes up the first 18 holes of the 36-hole complex which
played host to the 2010 Thailand
open and is considered as one of the premier golf resorts of Thailand. The
course design meets the high demands of championship golf and yet remains an enjoyable
challenge for all abilities. Each hole
has a minimum of five tees from which to play, but only the brave, or those who
regularly rub shoulders with the world’s best, venture from the back tees. All tees provide varying degrees of
difficulty, so that all golfers can appreciate the subtleties this course
offers.
Black Mountain Golf Club
Distance from hotel: (approx 20 mins)
Designed by Mr Phil
Ryan, the 7th new golf course in Hua Hin was transformed from lush jungle and
pineapple plantations. The course is set
in a valley, just next to the ‘Black Mountains’, which are so named because of
the large black rocks set into the mountains, providing a fantastic backdrop to
many of the holes. The course is a test
for the top golfers, but also very playable for the average golfer. All the holes provide the golfer with a safe
route but for the more adventurous player there is a higher risk option with a
potential greater reward.
Banyan Hua Hin Golf Club
Distance from hotel: (approx 30 mins)
Built among a pineapple plantation, this course opened
in October 2008 and is the newest Hua Hin golf course. It provides for spectacular mountain and ocean
views from most of the holes and is by a wide margin the best layout in the
area. Each hole has 6 tee boxes making
the course more or less challenging, and strategically placed water hazards,
waste and sand bunkers are spread out throughout the course. Lush Zyosia fairways, a local grass, are a
pleasure to hit from as balls sit up nicely on the fairways. Greens laid with Tiffeagle grass make for
fast but receptive putting surfaces.
