Trentham / Beau Desert Report August
22nd – 23rd 2016
The GSGB August Meeting took place at Trentham
and Beau Desert in Staffordshire where 73 members enjoyed playing two excellent
courses. The area had experienced three days of wet weather leading up to the
meeting but if not for a few soggy bunkers no one would have known. Trentham is a fine parkland course designed by Harry Colt. Well
known for its excellent greens and immaculate presentation the course has often
been used for Open Qualifying. There were a number of good scores on Day 1 with
the top of the leaderboard in the Men's competition
being tightly packed. It was a different story in the Ladies competition with
Kathryn Archibald holding a massive 9 point lead.
At Dinner we were joined by the Trentham
Captain, Martin Gee and his wife Gillian. Martin accepted the £500 Society
cheque from GSGB Chairman Robin Moser before speaking about the attractions of
the local and recent success of the Trentham junior
section.
Day 2 was a beautiful warm summers day at Beau Desert which is
a wonderful heathland layout. The course offers “all
year round” turf underfoot with attractive tree lined fairways and no shortage
of heather which was in full purple bloom. The course is well known for being
quite difficult, particularly the greens which are undulating and usually
rather quick and the scores reflected this. Barrie Luscombe from Bath had a day to remember when he had a hole-in-one at the short 10th. As well as receiving an engraved GSGB memento, Barrie was presented with a framed picture of the 10th hole, donated by Beau Desert Golf Club. The King of Morocco Cup was won by Richard
Wadkin from Sand Moor with an aggregate total of 67
points and the Runner-up was Mark Moorfoot from Bath
with 65 points. The Society Salver was won by Kathryn Archibald from Alnmouth with 72 points and the Runner-up was Clare Fulton
from Woburn with 63 points. Trentham and Beau Desert (2)
Congratulations to all prize winners. A full list can be

The next event will be at Broadstone/Isle
of Purbeck on September 20th – 21st.
