Report of meeting May 22nd - 23rd 2017

The opening meeting of the 2017 season was played over two of Suffolk's premier heathland courses, both currently featuring in the list of England's Top 100 courses. Seventy five members enjoyed two days of glorious weather as they battled for the honour of being crowned Scratch Cup winner 2017. The courses were as always challenging and in good shape, both having numerous bunkers and gorse bushes to contend with. Aldeburgh offers a stern test for everyone, the men in particular finding it tough as there are so many long par-4's but not a single par-5. At Dinner we were joined by the Aldeburgh Captain George Gaffney and his wife Alex, who along with everyone else, enjoyed a view of the most impressive of sunsets from the dining room. George spoke of the club's talented junior section as well as mentioning snippets of Aldeburgh's long and interesting history. GSGB Chairman Robin Moser presented George with a £500 donation which would be used for junior coaching. The men’s Scratch Cup was won for the 4th successive season by David Archibald from Alnmouth with 58 points in a very close run affair with Tim Russell from Moortown. David overcame a two shot deficit at the half way point to win on a card playoff. The Ladies Scratch Cup was won by newcomer Gabi Heuchel from East Berks who scored 56 points on her GSGB debut. The aggregate handicap winners were Paul Collier from Astbury with 70 points and Linda Cusack from Camberley Heath with 76 points. A full list of prize winners can be seen below.
The next meeting will be held at Conwy and North Wales on June 12th - 13th.
