Ilkley Report August 22nd – 23rd 2013
The GSGB August Meeting was held on two of Yorkshire highest ranked and most picturesque courses – Alwoodley and Ilkley. The 75 Members who took part enjoyed glorious playing conditions on both days as this year’s lovely summer continued.
Alwoodley is a classic heathland course designed by Dr Alister MacKenzie, many of the fairways being surrounded by heather which meant that straight hitting was essential if a good score was to be posted. It would probably be fair to say that the course won the day but a select few did score well.
At Dinner we were joined by the club Captain and past GSGB Chairman Mr Nigel Dickson as well as his wife Fran who is currently the Ladies Vice -Captain. The Ladies Captain Mrs Jo Summers who is a GSGB member also joined us for dinner. Nigel was presented with a £500 donation towards the Alwoodley junior section by GSGB Chairman Linda Hill.
Day 2 at Ilkley was again played in perfect conditions on another attractive MacKenzie layout. The river Wharfe comes into play on a number of holes but overall the scoring was slightly better and the lost ball count much lower.
The Sir Aynsley Bridgland Trophy for men was won by Mike Brown from Brookmans Park with 73 points. Mike impressively defended his title after winning in Cornwall last year. The ladies trophy was won by Gerry Bray from Littlestone who scored an excellent 74 points.
Congratulations to all prize winners. A full list can be seen below.
The next event will be the final one for the year at Gog Magog on September 23/24th.
..... Following the Alwoodley event the following article was written for the Alwoodley members.
Alwoodley Juniors given a boost by Golf Society of Great BritainNigel Dickson was last week presented with a cheque from the Golf Society of Great Britain. (GSGB). The cheque was presented to Nigel by the GSGB Chairman, Linda Hill, at the prize presentation after the GSGB held their tournament at Alwoodley last Thursday. Alwoodley has been participating in the GSGB scheme for 10 years now, and it’s a great way to get out and play some fantastic courses at reduced rates.
